Modifiers at the register

Required and optional choices, add-ons with a price and a recipe, what to do if the add-on you need is unavailable.

A modifier is a choice or an add-on to a dish: “medium”, “double cheese”, “no ice”. In POSitive a modifier changes not only the price but also the stock deduction — if it has a recipe.

Required choice

If a dish has a required group (for example, “Doneness”), the register asks for the choice as soon as the dish is added. Without a choice the item does not go into the order.

Why this is strict

A receipt that cannot be paid is the worst thing that can happen at rush hour. So the required choice is asked for on the way in, rather than popping up on the payment screen.

Optional add-ons

Add-ons are chosen afterwards: open the order line and tick what is needed. A group may allow one option or several at once — this is set up in the back office.

Price and stock

An add-on can have its own price — it is added to the line. If an add-on has a recipe, the product is deducted on sale too: the second portion of cheese really does leave the stock.

An add-on without a recipe works as a pure surcharge. That is fine for “serve on a plate”, but for “double cheese” it is better to set up a recipe — otherwise the food cost will be wrong.

If an add-on is unavailable

An add-on can be put on stop separately from the dish: the sauce has run out — only the sauce is greyed out, the dish keeps selling. A greyed-out add-on is visible but cannot be selected.

Website orders

In a website order the add-ons arrive together with the item. If the website sent an add-on the register could not recognise, the order is not thrown away: the manager sees a “needs a choice” task and confirms it manually. In detail — Dish matching.
