How to turn tips on, set quick percentages and why they are not part of revenue.

Turning them on

Tips are turned on in the register settings. The quick percentages are set there too — usually three buttons, for example 5, 10 and 15 %.

How it works at the register

On the payment screen the cashier taps a percentage or enters an amount. With card payment the tip is added to the charge; with cash it is recorded separately.

Why tips are not in revenue

It is the staff’s money, not the venue’s. If tips went into revenue, they would inflate the average check, the tax base and any bonus calculated as a percentage of revenue.

In the shift and in reports tips are shown on a separate line — so that at the end of the day it is clear how much of the cash in the drawer belongs to the waiters.
